The Flower Stall

I soon started a flower stall, out on the edge of the carriage sweep, where they showed from some distance away and cars could comfortably stop off the road. I made a moveable stall with two tea chests, painted blue, and a counter made of planks painted likewise on the top. When I had drugged and carried out the pests, a box, still marked on one side as having carried champagne, Veuve Clicquot 1905, was a good place for the tallest daffodils, with the shorter ones in front.

The most popular of all the bunches were what I called Posies. They were a tight mixture of all and any gay flowers I could get, arranged to give most effect. Really very pretty and unusual. They were very difficult and tiresome to bunch but always sold out very quickly.

I got all the credit for the stall, but it was Doreen and Robin Muir who brought me the biggest part of the suitable flowers, and I was thankful for the trouble they took. They supplied me with most magnificent daffodils, as well as the small gay flowers for the posies. The whole family of Muirs were exceedingly kind (and still are).

Kind neighbours, Mr. And Mrs. Cuthbert and the two very nice girls from over the way, were constantly a help. Mrs. Cuthbert always bought some, in real neighbourly fashion, and always helped in any way I needed it. (After, when it was not necessary, it was still very pleasant.)

The flower stall outside my gate gradually grew into being well-known. Many customers became regular yearly ones, and the gain became worth my trouble. It made quite a worthwhile service for Muthill Church.

FLOWER STALL

EV ran her Flower Stall for many years, with all of the proceeds benefiting her church (Muthill), which was in great need of a new roof. A nice way for one person to make a big difference in the lives of so many others.

DOREEN & ROBIN MUIR

Gerald Robin Muir and his wife, Doreen Margaret Watney, of Braco Castle in Braco, Muthill, Perth, Scotland. Another Royal Navy friend for EV.

WHOLE FAMILY OF MUIRS

Robin and Doreen were the parents of six children: Sarah Nadejda Muir, Anne Catriona Muir, Hugh James Robin Muir, Jean Charlotte Muir, Diana Rachael Muir, and Nicholas John Muir.

MUTHILL CHURCH

St. James, the local Church of England parish church, of great antiquity. By the way, it's pronounced "mew-thill".
