--- "Launceston, Past and Present" by Sir Alfred Robbins, 1888, page 143-4:
On June 17 Eliot followed up this exposure by denouncing Mohun to the Lords, but three days later he was forced to abandon the attack by melancholy news from Cornwall, the Commons Journals of the twentieth containing the entry "Sir John Eliot, in respect of the death of his wife, hath leave to go down into the country." Lady Eliot had been failing in health for some time, but the end, which took place at Port Eliot, was sudden. Of her "all that is known to us is the tenderness with which her husband described, as 'a loss never before equalled,' what had befallen him by her death; and that she was said to have been so devoted to her children as never to have willingly consented to be absent from them . . . Care for his younger children appears to have occupied him at first; and some were placed with their mother's father, Mr. Gedie, of Trebursey, to whom Eliot is lavish of grateful expression for his service at this time."

Radigund married Sir John Eliot in Jun 1609. John (son of Richard Eliot and Bridget Carswell) was born on 11 Apr 1592 in Cuddenbeak, St. Germans, Cornwall; was christened on 20 Apr 1592 in St. German's, St. Germans, Cornwall; died on 27 Nov 1632 in Tower of London. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Inherited his grandfather's estate of Trebursey in South Petherwin. Lived there and mostly likely died there. No burial record at St. Germans, so it's probable that he was buried at South Petherwin with his grandfather and other relatives. Died a bachelor.

    Notes:

Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Sir John Eliot (the great Patriot) and wife of Colonel Nathaniel Fiennes (second son of William Fiennes, 1st Viscount Saye and Sele, and later Speaker of Cromwell’s Parliament.

Brumby Hall in North Lincolnshire was bought and rebuilt for Nathaniel and Elizabeth (by his father) at the time of their marriage, and their arms can still be seen on the outside of the house today.

In her husband's 1669 will, instructions were given to his executors to take £10 and place a memorial in St. Lawrence Church for his "first and dearly beloved wife".

Elizabeth married Colonel Nathaniel Fiennes on 11 Aug 1636 in St. Mary's, Haynes, Bedford. Nathaniel (son of William Fiennes and Elizabeth Temple) was born in 1608 in Broughton, Oxfordshire; died on 16 Dec 1669 in Newton Toney, Wiltshire; was buried in St. Andrew, Newton Tony, Wiltshire. Notes:

--- "A Complete Parochial History of the County of Cornwall" Vol. 4, Joseph Polsue, 1872, page 65:
The chief place of the parish is Trebursey, and property and residence of Charles Gurney, Esq. This interesting was formerly the property and residence of the family of Gedy or Gedye; Richard Gedy of this place was sheriff 21 James I., 1623; he married Katherine, daughter of Hugh Boscawen, Esq., of Tregothnan, and died circa 1629, leaving an only daugher and heiress named Radigund, who became the wife of Sir John Eliot, Knt. of Port Eliot, the celebrated patriot. Daniel Eliot, grandson of Sir John, dying without issue male, bequeather Trebursey to his relative Edward Eliot, great-grandson of Sir John through his fourth son Nicholas. William Eliot, a descendant of this Nicholas, erected the present handsome mandion on a new site; but succeeding his elder brother, he became the 2nd Earl of S. Germans, and sold Trebursey to the late David Howell, Esq., of Ethy, from whom it passed to the present proprietor.

--- "The Cornish Magazine" by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, 1898, page 292-3:
Both as clergyman and schoolmaster, Ruddle figures in his own narrative; and it is possible, therefore, to test his accuracy in points of detail. He sets out with two specific assertions--- that there was in his school a lad named John Eliot, son of Edward Eliot of Treberse (or, as it is more usually called, Trebursye), and that he 'preached at [his] funeral, which happened on the 20th day of June, 1665.' Now, the name of Edward Eliot, of Trebursye, was one not lightly to be used at Launceston, and in connection with a story, he being one of the most prominent of all the neighbouring gentry. He was the third son of Sir John Eliot, the illustrious patriot, into whose family the possession of Trebursye had come through his marriage with the daughter of richard Gedie, one of the victims of Charles I.'s oppression. While in his fatal confinement in the Tower, Sir John Eliot had written to his father-in-law, with whom the ten-year-old lad was staying at Trebursye, 'I hope God will bless him with his growth to overcome the defluxion in his eyes, against which I see no practice does prevail;' and when grandfather and father alike had passed away, and Edward Eliot had seen the troubled times of the Great Rebellion, the local love for his forbears cased him to be returned for Launceston to the Convention Parliament--- 'by the proper officer,' as it was reported to the House of Commons. But a son of Sir John Eliot was not likely to be in favour at Westminster just then, and the Restoration party ousted him from his seat upon some undiscovered pretext, and gave it to one of Monk's active intriguers, while almost simultaneously the Lords were petitioned by some Cornish widow with a grievance to exempt him and his eldest brother from the General Act of Indemnity until her claim against them had been satisfied. From that time Edward Eliot, save for occasional appointment as a Commissioner of the Subsidy, settled down to a quiet life at Trebursye; and the parish register of Sourh Petherwin, in which that estate is situated, attests, as Ruddle relates, that 'John the son of Edward Elliot Esq and of Anne his wife was buried the 20th day of June 1665.'

Family/Spouse: Anne Fortescue. Anne (daughter of Francis Fortescue and Elizabeth Speccot) was born after 1620; died before 25 Jun 1661; was buried on 25 Jun 1661 in St. Paternus, South Petherwin, Cornwall. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    • "Sir John Eliot: A Biography" Vol. 2, John Forster, 1872, page 359:
It is not until more than a year later that any further change is intimated. But we find him then writing to his servant Hill that he had not changed his purpose for his daughter Bridget; that on the previous Saturday he had an 'intercourse' from Mrs. Frinde 'about her;' that her place was ready; and that he was to prepare accordingly to bring her up, whom he beseeched God to bless with all the rest.* The same plan was to be followed as with her sister Besse.

    * Port Eliot MSS. 9th October 1631

    • There is a pair of miniatures in the Port Eliot collection which are possible likenesses of Peter Fortescue and Bridget Eliot (near the time of their marriage in 1646). The portraits were examined by J.D. Milner, director of the National Portrait Gallery, who dated them between 1640 and 1650. The miniature of the woman bears a remarkable family resemblance to Sir John Eliot.

Bridget married Peter Fortescue on 12 Jan 1645/46 in St. Mary's, Churchstow, Devon. Peter (son of Francis Fortescue and Elizabeth Speccot) was born about 1620; died before 14 Aug 1685; was buried on 14 Aug 1685 in Ermington, Devon. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Susanna married Edward Norton on 29 Sep 1657 in St. Germans, Cornwall. Edward (son of Daniel Norton and Honor White) was born about 1618; was christened in 1618 in Southwick, Hampshire; died before 19 Mar 1679/80; was buried on 19 Mar 1679/80 in Southwick, Hampshire. Notes:

--- "Sir John Eliot: A Biography" by John Forster, Vol. 2, 1872, page 358:
Thomas, the elder of his two youngest boys, had died in the month following Eliot's sentence. I mark the date by a note of the 16th of April about the purchase of mourning for his sons at Oxford. He was expecting them at Whitsuntide, but told them at once to get what clothes were necessary. 'Better there than here, in respect of the trouble of sending. And in that observe your own convenience, either for cloth or stuff as may be answerable to mourning.'*

    * Port Eliot MSS. 16th April 1630. 'To my son Jo. Eliot.'

--- Parish Registers do not exist at St. Paternus, South Petherwin, before 1656. The children of the imprisoned Sir John Eliot were staying at Trebursey, the house of their grandfather (Richard Gedy), at the time of Thomas Eliot's death. Presumably, he was buried at St. Paternus, as it is the obvious burial place of the Gedy family. It is known that Richard Gedy was buried (also presumably at South Petherwin) beside his parents and some of his children, so it is likely that this young grandson was buried there as well.

  9. 11.  Nicholas EliotNicholas Eliot Descendancy chart to this point (2.Radigund2, 1.Katherine1) was born before 15 Jun 1628; was christened on 15 Jun 1628 in St. German's, St. Germans, Cornwall; died before 21 Sep 1689.

    Other Events:

    • Residence: 08 Dec 1659, St. Juliot, Cornwall

    Notes:

In a legal document dated 08 Dec 1659, he's listed as "Nicholas Eliot of St. Juliot, co. Cornwall, gentleman." The next mention that's come to light is another legal document dated 21 Sep 1689 - by which time Nicholas is listed as "late of St. Juliot, deceased."

It seems likely that Nicholas would have been buried at St. Juliot, but burial records there do not survive before 1663 (by which time Nicholas and his wife may already have died).

--- In January 1655/56, Nicholas and Katherine baptised their daughter, Susannah, at St. Martin on Looe, Cornwall. The only other Eliot mentioned in those registers is a burial record on 02 Jul 1658 for Tamysin Eliot (possibly another child of Nicholas and Katherine).

Nicholas married Katherine Prideaux on 18 Apr 1651 in St. Erth, Cornwall. Katherine (daughter of William Prideaux and Johanna Roscarrock) was born before 08 Feb 1626/27; was christened on 08 Feb 1626/27 in St. Erth, Cornwall. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    In teneris annis imperiosa vetat.

which we endeavour to imitate thus,---
The undegen'rate scion of his line
Norton and Elliott in his likeness shine,
But seven suns told, all conquering death laid low,
His Parents' hopes, and him at one fell blow.
Despotic death, that comes with blighting wing
To spoil the rich luxuriance of spring.

--- "Notes and Queries" Oxford University Press, 1868, page 472-3:
In the church of Cranborne there is a monument to the grandson of the great Sir John Eliot (3rd S. i. 445), who died at school there, and in consequence, it is said, of being choked by a bone whilst eating his dinner. The statue of the youth is at some height from the floor, and he holds something in his hand which is obscurely seen from below, but which popular tradition declares to be a representation of the identical mutton bone that caused his death! On closer inspection it proves to be a nosegay!

Eliot, Richard (1652-85), of Port Eliot, St. Germans, Cornwall.

    Ensign, Plymouth garrison 1676-8.
    Commr. for assessment, Cornwall. 1679-80.

As a younger son Eliot was intended for a military career and in 1676 entered the service at Plymouth garrison under the Earl of Bath. In 1678, however, the justices for the Western circuit received a warrant to suspend the execution of any sentence passed on him should he be found guilty of the death of one John Grimes of Plymouth. Possibly this incident caused him to leave the army, for there is no further evidence of his military career, though he must have been either acquitted or pardoned, since he was returned to the Exclusion Parliaments for his father's borough of St. Germans. Classed as 'honest' by Shaftesbury, he duly voted for the first exclusion bill. Otherwise he was totally inactive. He was buried at St. Germans on 22 Dec. 1685.

    Notes:

This is one of the few undocumented Eliots in the line of ancestry connecting the Earls of St. Germans to Sir John Eliot. William's parents were both native to Cornwall, his father from St. Juliot, his mother St. Erth. It's likely that William himself was also born in the area, but many of the local churches have lost their earliest parish registers, so a baptism record for William (and his three siblings) has not turned up.

Based on documents viewed at Port Eliot during the 19th century, William was listed in the 1868 Genealogical Record as an Officer in the Royal Navy, living at Cuddenbeak (a leased house on the Port Eliot estate) by leave of his cousin and owner of the estate, Daniel Eliot. Surviving mortgages and legal documents record his name as "William Eliot, gentleman of Lewannick", Lewannick being a neighboring parish whose tithes were vested in the Eliot family.

At some point before 1693, William married Ann Williams, the daughter of Lawrence Williams of Ireland; they were blessed with four sons and two daughters. Since records have yet to turn up for their marriage or the births of their first four children, it may be that they were married in Ireland and lived there for a time. As an officer in the Royal Navy, it is very likely that William spent some time in Ireland. Sadly, the Admiralty records were very poor at that time and do not even offer a complete list of officers, let alone any clues as to their times and places of service.

By the summer of 1693, William and his wife were back in Cornwall, their fifth child being baptised at St. Germans in June and buried in September. They were still there, living at Cuddenbeak, when their last child, Richard, was born in September of the following year. Eight years later, in 1702, their oldest son, Edward, inherited the Port Eliot estate from William's cousin, Daniel Eliot. It seems likely that the whole family would have lived at Port Eliot, but if there is any surviving evidence of that, it's hidden in an attic or unmarked trunk.

The date and place of William's death and burial, like his birth and baptism, are a total mystery at this time. The best clues available come from a handful of legal documents, the first pair of which (dated January 1687) shows William Eliot securing the tithes and messuages in "churchtown" in Lewannick for his heirs forever. According to a documented lawsuit dating from January-March 1702/03, William's wife was a widow, and his son's estate was being handled by the trustees appointed in Daniel Eliot's will. This narrows the time of William's death to the years between the writing of Daniel's will in 1694 and the beginning of 1702/03. He was not buried at St. German's, either in the churchyard or the Eliot family vault. His wife was buried there in April 1723, and a large stone slab on the floor of the church is dedicated to "Ann, relict of William Eliot, Esq.". This is the only memorial remaining for this grandfather of Edward, 1st Lord Eliot, through whom all of the Earls of St. Germans descend.
