I am credibly informed, that out of one division alone 150 men were taken out of the trenches to the hospital tents, seized with cramp and half frozen, not so much, perhaps, from the cold, as from the want of proper clothing and inability to move about to circulate the blood. Lieutenant Ramsbottom, of the 97th Regiment, was found dead in his tent this morning, from the vapours of charcoal in a stove, and Mr. Vicars, of the same regiment, was discovered in a precarious state from the same cause, but is now better. I have heard that an engineer officer is also dangerously ill from similar want of caution, and there are rumours, to which I do not attach much credence, of men having died on their posts last night from cold.

OFFICERS SUFFOCATED IN THEIR TENTS. Captain Swinton, of the Royal Artillery, a gallant and excellent Officer, was recently found dead in his tent, suffocated by the fumes of charcoal from a stove which he had placed within it for the purpose of warmth. Lieutenant Ramsbottom, of the 97th Regiment, was also found dead in his tent, from a similar cause. It seems that great numbers of iron stoves have been brought out from Constantinople, and are not used with proper caution, and several Officers have been half-killed by carbonic-acid gas generated in these deadly apparatus.

The Ramsbottom family features fairly significantly in the Clairmont family's letters. Ada Ramsbottom and her sister, Emily Ramsbottom Wilbraham, were Claire's friends. Their parents were James and Emma Ramsbottom. On 7 May 1845, Claire sent Mary Shelley a letter of introduction to Ada whom she called a "charming girl," and very "domestic" (CC II: 429-30). On 23 June 1845, Mary Shelley responded to Claire, informing her that she had invited both sisters to a party to celbrate the Regatta in Putney. Claire wrote back, confirming that Ada greatly admired Mary Shelley. On 28 June 1845, Mary Shelley recorded in a letter that Ada and her sister had attended her party and she noted her satisfaction with Mrs. Wilbraham's looks. Mrs. Wilbraham apparently wore "rouge" (LMWS III: 189). Mary Shelley did not, however, mention Ada, an omission on which Claire remarked in her letter of 4 July 1845. Mary Shelley responded on 7-10 July 1845, praising Mrs. Wilbraham's complexion and noting that she had not said much to Ada, but that she had found Ada to be a pleasant young woman (LMWS III: 194). By October 1845, Mary Shelley was writing to Claire about prospective wives for Percy Florence and she mentioned Ada Ramsbottom (LMWS III: 243).

More than 40 years ago two young Englishmen, Guy and Ivor Peyton, came to Queensland and became part owners of Oakwood stationin the Charleville district. Later they acquired considerable property in Brisbane, which is still held by the family.
They returned to England some years ago, Ivor becoming a member of the staff of his brother, General Sir William Peyton, in Gallipoli, afterwards commanding a labour battalion in France. After the war he bought Englemere Wood at Ascot, in Berkshire, taking a prominent part in the local affairs of his district.
This week I had information that Ivor, then 74 years of age, had been accidentally killed by falling from a railway bridge. A detailed report in an English newspaper says that he was taking his dogs for a walk and fell from the bridge in a fit of giddiness.
Many old RESIdents of the Charleville district will remember the kindly owners of Oakwood.

In Smolensk, my family members were shot: my cousin Irina is 17 years old, my cousin Dmitry is 14 years old, my uncle Sergey Borisovich Shcherbatov with his wife Elizaveta, nee Plautina, aunt, Princess Khovanskaya. Her line after this "purge" ceased. I wrote down all the coordinates, but I did not immediately tell anyone. I arrived the next day alone, opened the first box, there were about 20 tons of documents. Very sweet and intelligent, she did not want to talk about Smolensk: "We will not talk about this. I suffered so much. " Financially, she was helped from France, where money was left for her. My aunts - Mary and Anyuta (Golitsyna), born Shcherbatov, died. But before the revolution, Grandma Shcherbatova, the father's mother, had one of the famous diadems of Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. The bride's travelling costum was of dark brown silk and Georgette, with fur coat and muff.

OFFICERS WHO HAVE FALLEN
The Dowager Duchess of Abercorn states that a German officer has written to inform her that her son, Capt. Lord John Hamilton, of the Irish Guards, was killed on November 9, while leading a charge. The War Office have no confirmation of his death. Lord John Hamilton is the second surviving son of the second Duke of Abercorn, and brother of the present Duke. He was born in 1883, and was educated at Wellington College. He received his captaincy in the Irish Guards in 1909, and in 1913 became captain of the Reserve Battalion. In the latter year he was appointed Deputy Master of His Majesty's Household. In December, 1910, he unsuccessfully contested the North Tyrone Division in the Conservative interest.

Captain Archibald Edward Kennedy, the eldest son of the late Sir John Gordon Kennedy, of His Majesty's Diplomatic Service, and of Lady Kennedy, lost his life at Le Cateau, but his name has not yet appeared in the official list of casulties. He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1900, and was with his regiment in India and South Africa.

LADY KENNEDY'S SON KILLED
It is announced that Captain Archibald Edward Kennedy, of the 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, has been killed in the trenches at Le Cateau.

He was the eldest son of the late Sir John G. Kennedy, K.C.M.G., and Lady Kennedy (who till recently RESIded at Holmhurst, St. Helen's Park). He was born in 1878, and educated at Eton and Oriel College, Oxford. He joined the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders in 1900, and was with his regiment in India and South Africa. He qualified in a course of instruction at the London School of Economics, and was gazetted Captain in July, 1912. He was officially reported missing after the Battle of Cambrai-Le Cateau, but information has now been received that he was killed in the last burst of firing before the few survivors of his company were surrounded by the enemy on the evening of August 26th. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's, Cranley-gardens, at 11.30, to-day (Saturday).

Captain Paul Adrian Kennedy, 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade (killed in action on May 9 at Aubers Ridge), was born in 1886. Captain Kennedy belonged to the family of the Marquis of Ailsa. He was the third son of the late Sir John Gordon Kennedy, K.C.M.G., British Minister to Roumania, and of Lady Kennedy (now of 56 Cranley Gardens, London). She was Evelyn Bootle Wilbraham, niece of the first Earl of Lathom, and sister of the Dowager Countess of Crawford and Balcarres. Captain Kennedy was wounded last September, and his eldest brother was killed in action inn August. Sir John Kennedy's grandfather was the third son of the eleventh Earl of Cassillis and the brother of the twelfth Earl, who was created Marquis of Ailsa. Captain Kennedy was the cousin of the present and 27th Earl of Crawford.

Lieutenant John Patrick Francis Kennedy, 5th, attached 2d Rifle Brigate (wounded in France), is a cousin of the Marquis of Ailsa. He was born in September, 1891. Mr. Kennedy is the youngest son of the late Sir John Gordon Kennedy, British Minister to Roumania, by his marriage with Evelyn (now of 50 Cranley Gardens, London), daughter of Color the Hon. Edward Bootle Wilbraham. Lady Kennedy is the sister of the Dowager-Countess of Crawford and Balcarres. Two of Mr. Kennedy's brothers have been killed in the present war.
