At first glance, this looks just like an elderly (about 80 years old) Miss Eliza Stringer, longtime Nanny to the Montague Eliot family. However, having been born in 1873, it is unlikely that Eliza dressed like this in 1953 England. Perhaps this is a photo of her mother, Mrs William (Sarah Ann Mitchell) Stringer of Holkham, born in 1837. One has to ask, though, why the Eliots would have kept a photograph of Eliza's mother. Perhaps someone else will come forward with more information.
