Marion Saumarez had a fall, when in Rome, and was accompanied home by an English nurse, well-known and honoured in Rome, by the name of Dottoressa. Mother and I were asked to go to Shrubland and keep her company, as her Mother and Gladys were in their place in Guernsey. It was very pleasant indeed, and I particularly enjoyed the gardens and the flight of steps leading to the great fountain, where a few fish swam. This time together gave me the great happiness of Marion and Gladys as real friends. However, the outcome of their kindness landed me with three stitches in my forehead. A hired horse to join a riding party had mysteriously bolted at a gate in the sheep walk. I could not stop him but came off when he had carried me under the lower branches of a tree and walked back to the house. Marion met me searching and took me to the house.
